BUDGET

Your money, with a first and last name.

A budget is not a punishment: it is deciding before you spend, instead of wondering afterward where the money went. If you do not give every dollar a job, the month decides for you.

1

Write down what comes in

Your real income after taxes: salary, extra income, everything. That is the number you work with, not the one in the contract.

2

Write down what goes out

Rent, food, transportation, debts, subscriptions. One month of reviewing your transactions tells you more than any advice.

3

Set savings aside first

Before spending, set aside what you decided to save. What is left is what you spend — not the other way around.

A METHOD TO START WITH

The 50/30/20, simply put

A general guide, not a rule: 50% for needs (rent, food, transportation), 30% for wants (outings, streaming, treats), and 20% for savings and debt payments. If your numbers do not match those percentages, no problem: use them as a compass, not a test.

Watch out for ant expenses: coffees, apps, and small treats that alone look like nothing and together eat up the month’s savings. Writing them down for a week is usually the biggest surprise in a budget.
